Balancing cardan shafts on a stand

A cardan shaft is balanced on a stand, in its working position and on several supports at once. That is the job the four channels of Balanset-4 were built for.

Direct answer

Which instrument fits cardan shafts?

Balanset-4. A driveshaft on a balancing stand needs simultaneous measurement at several supports, and the correction is usually welded or clamped at the calculated angles in two to four planes.

Before the first run

Mechanical checks come first

  • Inspect universal joints, splines and centering surfaces for play and wear before balancing.
  • Mount the shaft on the stand supports in its working position with correct yoke phasing.
  • Confirm that readings repeat at the selected balancing speed.

Order of work

A controlled balancing sequence

  1. 01

Connect sensors at the stand supports—up to four channels on Balanset-4—and the tachometer at the reference mark.

  2. 02

Measure the initial run, then trial weights sequentially in each correction plane.

  3. 03

Let the software calculate masses and angles for all selected planes at once.

  4. 04

Attach the correction by welding plates or fitting clamps at the calculated angles.

  5. 05

Repeat the trim run until residual unbalance meets the tolerance class of the shaft.
